Mohenjo-Daro: The World’s First Planned City and Masterpiece of Ancient Urban Planning

Long before the rise of ancient Rome or the great cities of Mesopotamia, Mohenjo-Daro emerged as one of the most advanced urban centers of the ancient world. Founded around 2600 BCE (with possible origins as early as 3300 BCE) in the Indus Valley, this remarkable city featured a perfectly grid-based street layout, multi-story fired-brick houses with courtyards, an sophisticated underground sewer system, and advanced water management — features that would not appear in Europe for another 4,000 years.

Sacsayhuaman: Giant Stones and Ancient Engineering Above Cusco

Once again we return to South America. After exploring the ancient ruins of Tiwanaku, we now turn to another astonishing megalithic site — Sacsayhuaman (Saksaywaman), located on a hill overlooking the “archaeological capital” of Peru, Cusco. This impressive complex features three massive zigzag walls built from enormous stone blocks, some weighing tens of tons, perfectly cut and fitted with incredible precision. Officially, it is described as an Inca fortress and palace. However, the scale, engineering sophistication, and stonework quality suggest that its builders possessed far more advanced technology than the Inca civilization is credited with.Spanish chronicler Garcilaso de la Vega wrote: “He who has not seen it for himself will not believe that such stones could have been used in construction; they inspire awe and terror in anyone who examines them closely.”Today, only the lower walls remain in their full grandeur — the upper palace complex was largely dismantled by the Spanish to build houses in Cusco.A true architectural enigma of pre-Columbian America.
